Admin Guide Instructions for Customizing Tutorials

Within the Help / Tutorials tab of the DesignPLUS sidebar, users can find both Cidi Labs Tutorials and Local Tutorials.

Institutions can design their own tutorials that will appear in the Local Tutorials section, using a Cidi Labs tutorial template. These tutorials can be DesignPLUS related (example: how to use a specific, institutional template), but may also be on any topic (example: how to use your institution's media hosting system to embed a video).

Add New Tutorial

DesignPLUS allows for new tutorials to be created, but the page must follow the correct structure. To add a new tutorial:

Duplicate the page called, "[Tutorial] Cidi Labs Template". This page can be found in the DesignPLUS Primary Customizations course, or in Canvas Commons: [Tutorial] Cidi Labs Template.
Edit the page, and change "Cidi Labs Template" to whatever you would like your tutorial to be called. Do NOT remove "[Tutorial] " from the title.
Add a brief description in the space provided. Developer Note: This div must have class="dp-tutorial-description"
Add categories (separated by commas) in the space provided. Developer Note: This div must have class="dp-tutorial-categories"
Add the tutorial's body content in the space provided. You may use the sidebar to develop rich content here, but because viewers will be seeing tutorials in edit mode, interactive pieces like accordions and quick checks will not be rendered or usable. Developer Note: This div must have class="dp-tutorial-body"
Save the page.
If the page exists in a Customizations course (Primary, Extended, Shared), publish the page to make it visible to users. If this is a course-level customization, publishing is not necessary.

Edit Existing Tutorials

To edit an existing tutorial:

Edit the [Tutorial] page.
Make the desired changes to the page.
Save the page.

Categorize Tutorials

You can add categories to tutorials to help organize them in expanders in the sidebar. Tutorials without a category will be added to a "General" expander. To add a category to a tutorial:

In the "Tutorial Categories" field, type any category you wish to appear as an expander panel in the sidebar.
Add additional categories by creating a comma separated list.
Save the page.

Tutorials are not categorized by their source automatically, so users will not be able to determine which tutorials came from the primary customizations course versus the extended customizations course, or whether they are sourced from within the class itself. If it's important for you to make that distinction, you can use categories to identify these locations.

Show/Hide Tutorials

In a Primary, Extended, or Shared Customizations Course:

You can toggle the visibility of individual tutorials inside a Customizations course. This is controlled through the published state of the page.

- To show a tutorial, simply publish the page in the customizations course.
- To hide a tutorial, unpublish the page.

Course-level customization for a single course:

If a [Tutorial] page is saved inside the current course, it will be loaded in the Local Tutorials tool regardless of its published state. To hide it from the sidebar, you can remove the [Tutorial] prefix from the page title.

If you have a draft version of a tutorial you are working on but don't want users to see yet, you could temporarily title it with "[Tutorial-draft]", and it will not be picked up by the sidebar until you remove the "-draft" from the title.

Delete Tutorials

You may remove tutorials that you do not want anymore.

In a Primary, Extended, or Shared Customizations Course:

Simply delete the [Tutorial] page from the course. Alternatively, you can unpublish the tutorial to make it unavailable to users but still keep the page.

Course-level customization for a single course:

At the course-level, we have designed the [Tutorial] pages to appear in the sidebar, even if they are unpublished in the Pages area. If you wish to remove a tutorial from the course, you will need to delete the [Tutorial] page.
