LTI Support Troubleshooting

The following describes potential issues you might encounter when using the LTI tools and what you can do about them.

Current Canvas API Issues

Module Builder: Duplicating Discussions

Update: I have determined that the issue is tied to users with a Developer role in the course and does not impact users with a Teacher role. I have passed that information on to Canvas.

The April 14, 2021 Canvas deploy broke the Canvas API for duplicating a discussion template. We have reached out to Canvas about the issue but have not received any updates.

Until that is resolved, we have added a fallback that uses our original method for duplicating discussions if the Canvas duplicate API fails. This fallback method should cover most of the settings from the original template but will not catch all settings (like grading rubrics).

Once Canvas updates their API, the Module Builder will automatically change back over to using their duplicate API.

Possible Issues

Authorization Failed Message

If you see an Authorization Failed message, click the Why am I getting this error? button here or in that message for troubleshooting instructions.

Existing content is not showing

Some content is missing

If most of the content appears to be fine but some content is missing, here are some things you can check:

Navigate the course in Canvas to ensure that the content does exist in Canvas.
Only showing 10 or 100 items? If the number of items returned is 10 or 100, this could be due to only getting the first batch of responses from Canvas. Please send screenshots and any additional information to help us troubleshoot to support@cidilabs.com.

All content is missing

If the Multi-Tool is not listing any existing templates or modules, it is probably an issue with your authorization of the tool. Follow the instructions at the bottom of this page to update the tool authorization.

New content wasn't created

Some content was created but some pieces were missing

This may be an issue with the Canvas API. Please send screenshots and any additional information to help us troubleshoot to support@cidilabs.com.

No content was created

This is probably an issue with your authorization of the tool. Follow the instructions at the bottom of this page to update the tool authorization.

Not all template settings copied over

Assignments, Discussions and Pages

With Assignments, Discussions and Pages, we use the Canvas duplicate API which should copy all content and settings including grading rubrics and external LTI assignments like New Quizzes. If something is missing, please send screenshots and any additional information to help us troubleshoot to support@cidilabs.com.

Classic Quizzes

With Canvas' classic Quizzes, we are very limited in what we can copy. We can copy most of the basic settings but we cannot touch quiz questions or question banks. If you find some basic settings missing, please send screenshots and any additional information to help us troubleshoot to support@cidilabs.com.

Remove/Update tool Authorization

Certain changes in Canvas or in the tools may require you to reauthorize the tools. This should automatically prompt you to authorize the tools the next time you open a tool, however, we have encountered instances where this did not happen.

Remove old authorization

To remove your original authorization of the tools:

Open the user panel in the main Canvas navigation by clicking your profile image
Click Settings
Scroll down to the Approved Integrations section
Find all instances of Cidi Labs DesignPLUS in the list and delete them by clicking the trash icon

For institutions who have been using the tools for quite a few years, you might see something like Design Tools instead.
When asked if you are sure you want to delete the access key, click Okay

A note about deleting the authorization

Removing this authorization does not impact any content you have previously created. This is just what allows the tools to make changes in Canvas on your behalf. Once the changes are made, they are part of Canvas.

Authorize tools

Once you have deleted all of the stored authorizations, visit the Multi Tool or the Upload / Embed Image tool and you should be prompted to authorize the tool.
