Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
General FAQ
Where do I find ObservEd?
ObservEd is an LTI that sits in its own course. This means you will need to be added to the course by an ObservEd admin. Once enrolled, you can navigate to the course in Canvas, and select ObservEd from the Canvas course menu.
Does Cidi Labs store sensitive student data?
No! Your student performance data remains safely in Canvas, where it belongs.
- ObservEd is a Canvas LTI tool that pulls real-time student data and displays it within your Canvas instance.
- ObservEd users have the option of downloading ObservEd Reports in a CSV format, which would take the data outside of Canvas, but only users who can (1) authenticate to your Canvas instance and (2) have been enrolled in the ObservEd class can do so.
- Cidi Labs only stores the Student's name and Canvas User ID. We do not store grades, submissions, or any other course performance data.
Will students know they are being observed?
ObservEd will not notify students if they have been added to ObservEd for monitoring; however, if an Observer reaches out to a student using the Send Message feature, students will see a line of text at the top of the message indicating that it was sent by the Observer's name from the ObservEd tool.
Students who have been added to ObservEd generally know they must meet specific grade requirements to compete or participate in their extra curricular activity.
How do I keep student data private while training my colleagues?
ObservEd includes a Sample Data Mode that any user can activate. This mode hides the private, real student data, and provides fictitious data instead. This mode can be activated through the User Setting page.
If I select multiple students to message, will the messages be sent privately?
Yes! Each message will be sent individually to each unique student for privacy.
Is ObservEd capable of tracking uniquely selected courses?
ObservEd courses are determined by the students and terms you are tracking. Admins can add or remove as many Canvas terms as they would like to, and ObservEd will display data for all courses a student is enrolled in, across those terms. You cannot select specific courses to track.
Is the data retrieval limited to current enrollments? Or are concluded enrollments included, too?
Current and concluded enrollments are part of the data, so you can get a holistic view of student trends.
Will teachers see this data for their own class?
Unless the teacher has been added to ObservEd, they will not see this data in the ObservEd interface.
Student Details, Course Details, & Analytics FAQ
Can I see Quizzes and Graded Discussions too?
Yes! Quizzes and Graded Discussions are included in the Assignments we pull into ObservEd.
How is the Participation data determined?
Participation data is determined by interactions on any part of the course including interactions, discussions, submissions, etc. This is a metric that is tracked by Canvas.
Admin FAQ
Can ObservEd be installed at the sub-account level?
ObservEd is generally installed once, and often at the root level, as it is possible to limit access for Observers to specific Student Groups. However, if you have a larger district or institution, and more siloing is necessary, ObservEd can be installed in multiple sub-accounts in Canvas.
Do staff need to be enrolled as "Observers" in Canvas?
No, staff do not need to be enrolled as Canvas Observers. They just need to be enrolled in the ObservEd Course.
Can Student enrollments be uploaded with a CSV file?
Yes! For more information, see the steps in the User Guide: Dashboard under the panel Add Students.
Is there a recommended maximum number of students to enroll?
With the combination of Observer Teams and Student Groups, ObservEd allows filtering to just what is needed for an individual user. There is no recommended maximum, but we do recommend that you establish appropriate Observer Teams and Student Groups to manage access.
Is there a limit to the number of Observer Teams or Student Groups in ObservEd?
No, there is not a limit to the number of Observer Teams or Student Groups.
